Festival focuses on the music theatre with program emphasising the spirituality of the historical convent. The festival has presented the performances of choirs, various ensembles and even puppet theatre, ballet performances, productions of Orff's "Carmina burana", Verdi's "Requiem", Poulenc's "Les Dialogues des Carmelites", Gounod's "Faust", Britten's "Albert Herring", Weill's "Sieben Todsünden" to name but a few. The artistic director of the festival is Tonu Kaljuste. The festival program includes 5-6 productions, among them something from the world classics of opera, some of the most beloved and frequently performed large-scale works of symphonic music, presumably an opera by an Estonian author, and definitely a concert blending classical music with pop music Birgitta festival

The Birgitta Festival 2024 will take place from August 2nd to 11th, 2024, in a temporary opera theater, specially built for this event, nestled among the ruins of the Pirita Monastery, with nearly 900 seating places. The festival program includes 5-6 productions, among them something from the world classics of opera, some of the most beloved and frequently performed large-scale works of symphonic music, presumably an opera by an Estonian author, and definitely a concert blending classical music with pop music.
